ARC says Smart Grid Software Market to Grow 65% in Five Years

August 5, 2010: The worldwide Smart Grid Operations Management software and services market will grow by greater than 65% over the next five years, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.1 percent. A new report published by ARC Advisory Group projects this substantial growth will result from a concurrent wave of new technology and worldwide infrastructure spending driven by sovereign investment programs. These sovereign investment programs are heavily focused on technology to improve grid reliability, efficiency, and information management capabilities. Smart grid operations management software is a critical element in the development of more efficient and reliable electric grids.

August 4, 2010 - Frost & Sullivan's World Distributed Control System (DCS) Market report says DCS manufacturers will have to be wary of competition from supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, which use PC-based software to integrate programmable logic controllers (PLC) on a network to replicate the functions of DCS.

July 25, 2010 - The HART Communication Foundation announced that the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) has approved the WirelessHART specification as a European National Standard (EN 62591). CEN released the standard to CENELEC, the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization, whose members are the national electrotechnical committees of 31 European countries. CENELEC approved the WirelessHART European Standard on 01 June 2010.

Strong Investment Drives Industrial PC Growth in China Market

Shanghai, July 13, 2010 -- Despite the worldwide recession, sales of industrial PCs are showing quite a healthy growth in the Chinese market, according to the results of a latest China-focused market report from IMS Research.

Market analyst Alex Hong commented “In order to sustain economic growth, the Chinese Government put forward an economic stimulus plan for 4 trillion Yuan ($586 billion USD), more than 35% of which is planned to be used to develop public infrastructure.”Infrastructure investments are being spent largely on railway construction, which is becoming the biggest driving force for industrial PC market development. The total revenues of industrial PCs in the Chinese market is forecasted to grow to near 330 million US$ by 2013, with a five-year CAGR of about 10%.

Emerson acquires Innovative Control Systems

July 1, 2010 — Emerson Process Management acquired Clifton Park, N.Y.-based Innovative Control Systems Inc. (ICS), a leader in turbine control upgrades for power generation applications. The acquisition expands Emerson’s capabilities in the growing combustion turbine automation market. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

June 30, 2010 – Honeywell will help Abu Dhabi Gas Development Company Ltd achieve safe and efficient production at the Shah Gas Development Project, which is expected to significantly increase the Emirate’s domestic gas supply. When it reaches full production capacity in 2014, the site is expected to process some 1 billion cubic feet of gas per day. Abu Dhabi Gas Development Company Ltd is a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. (ADNOC).

Invensys to control two 650MW pressurized water reactors in China

June 17, 2010 - Invensys Operations Management signed a second long-term agreement with China Nuclear Power Engineering (CNPE) to provide safety and distributed control systems and solutions for two 650MW pressurized water reactor units under construction on Hainan Island on the southern tip of China.

May 21, 2010 - Invensys Operations Management signed a US $12.4 million contract to upgrade and modernize a distributed control system (DCS) for Malaysia Liquefied Natural Gas Sdn. Bhd. (MLNG). The major upgrade will provide a continuously current DCS, sustain the productivity and safety of MLNG’s liquid natural gas operations in Bintulu, Sarawak, Malaysia. The project is expected to be completed by 2014.

Honeywell to Acquire Matrikon

May 13, 2010 – Honeywell signed an agreement valued at approximately $142 million USD (approximately $145 million CAD) to acquire Matrikon, a company specializing in software that helps industrial manufacturers operate their plants safely, reliably and efficiently. The acquisition will strengthen Honeywell’s position in the high-growth oil and gas and power value chains and increase its global footprint in key regions. The transaction is subject to approval by Matrikon’s shareowners.

Medium Voltage Motor Drives Sales Flat in 2009, Projected to Decline in 2010
